1556 vereinbarte Herzog Albrecht V. mit dem Jesuitenorden die Errichtung einer Höheren Schule in München. Sein Sohn Wilhelm V. ließ 1583 - 1597 die Kirche und das Kolleg St. Michael erbauen. Nach schweren Verwüstungen durch Bomben 1944 wurde die Kirche wieder aufgebaut und renoviert.
